This device is an essential part in setting large gantry systems utilizing linear stepping motors.  Specifically, the cathatometer is designed to adjust the alignment of linear stepping motor laminations.  The linear motors were mounted on either side of a four foot long composite beam that carried laser focusing optics mounted on another linear motor running along the length of the beam.  When the laminations are not aligned motor performance suffers considerably.

This is a scaled up version of the Portage design which uses two opposed overarm instead of one.  The design is capable of measuring propellers 25 feet in diameter to a precision of +/- .015 inch.  The mechanical specifications are carried elsewhere in this web site.

This is representative of several designs executed for firms which use reflected laser light to examine films on rigid disk media.
