Automatic Screw Machines And Tooling

 

This is representative of a series of automatic screw machine tool holder designs created for the Brown & Sharpe PTC and Ultramatics..   Indexable insert technology was integrated into the newer designs.  There also are several interesting cross-slide designs for cutoff, circular form and dovetail form tool holders.  Designs range from some interesting cross-slide actuated profile and relief boring turret tool holders to the mundane stock stop.

The bed casting for the Brown & Sharpe #2 Ultramatic was redesigned to accommodate more recent advancements in sand casting.

 

Grinding Machine Spindles

These are antifriction bearing grinding machine spindles designed for the Brown & Sharpe 618 surface grinder.  They are kingpost designs using preloaded class 7 angular contact bearings.  Each design features a labyrinth seal at the wheel end and is dynamically balanced as an assembly.  The motorized version features a rotor fit on a taper on the tailshaft.

Process Tooling

Several generations of process tooling have been designed for assemblies and details.   Tooling has been designed for the Disk Drive, Medical Instrument, Semiconductor Process Equipment, Machine Tool and Linear Motor industries.

Propeller Blade Surface Measuring Machine

This was designed for a west coast shipyard for installation by a valley firm that has now been literally reduced to rubble.  It is included to show the richness of the industrial landscape we once enjoyed.

The design is a scaled up Portage-style measuring machine with two arms.  Each counterweighted arm is actuated by a recirculating ballscrew driven by a DC servomotor with feedback provided by an inductive (Ferrand) linear encoder.  The horizontal axis was likewise actuated via a ballscrew drive with feedback provided by an inductive linear encoder..  Measurement heads composed of LVDT probes were mounted at the end of each spar.

While the designs on this page represent functioning products, several details in each case have been deleted or altered to protect the client.
